Almost 1/4 of the men from Ringgold Co, Iowa who fought in the Civil War lost their lives! This must have been devastating for the people of this county. Many of the deaths were in Co G, 4th IA Infantry. December 20th 1862 saw The 4th Iowa Infantry in the attack on Chickasaw Bluffs. Without any support, the 4th moved on the front lines under constant fire while waiting for support that never arrived to help. There were 112 men from the 4th Iowa Infantry killed or wounded in that battle. The 4th Iowa Infantry was quoted by The New York Tribune as "one of the bravest, truest, and most tenacious fighting brigades in the service" **NOTE: Ages given in this database are the age on enlistment date. |
